MONTE VISTA – The second-ranked Sanford High School girls basketball team won the Southern League League Tournament blue bracket on Saturday as it defeated eighth-ranked Sargent 46-35 at the Monte Vista High School gym.

The Lady Mustangs got off to a fast start with Claire Crowther scoring two early layups. Brinlyn Smith and Makynlee Faucette both drained 3-point baskets to give Sanford a 10-0 lead.

Kandace Pargin made a three and later converted two free throws to cut the lead to 10-5 at the end of the first quarter.

Smith made another three to start the second quarter, and Faucette made a pair of free throws. Kandace Pargin made a layup and added a free throw, but Faucette buried another trey for an 18-8 advantage.

Crowther made a layup and a free throw, and Jewel Caldon split at the line. Angelise Garcia made two free throws to end the first half with Sanford leading 22-10.

Faucette opened the second half with two free throws and Crowther knocked down a jumper. Kandace Pargin drove for a layup, but Crowther scored again for a 28-12 lead.

Kandace Pargin hit a jumper, however, Crowther scored two more baskets, and Shasta Bond scored in the paint to increase the lead to 34-14.

Kandace Pargin scored again and Makenzie Consaul also scored to reduce the Lady Mustangs’ lead to 34-18 at the end of the third quarter.

Kandace Pargin made a layup and added a free throw, and her twin sister, Kimmy, hit a jumper to bring the Lady Farmers within 34-23. But Smith connected on another three.

Kandace Pargin scored in the paint, and Kimmy Pargin made two free tosses. Caldon made a pair from the line, but Consaul made a layup, and Garcia split at line.

Avery Koenig made a pair of charity shots, but Kimmy Pargin scored in the paint. Smith made her fourth 3-pointer of the game, but Kandace Pargin scored again.

Brooklynn Reynolds split at the line, as did Koenig. Kandace Pargin also made one of two free throws to close out the scoring.

The Lady Mustangs had three players score in double figures. Crowther was the top scorer with 15 points, followed by Smith with 12, and Faucette with 10.

Kandace Pargin led all scorers with 22 points.

Both Sanford (21-2) and Sargent (17-5) will host regional tournaments this weekend.

Southern Plains League Tournament

In other blue bracket games on Saturday, South Park defeated Trinidad 39-38 for seventh place, Sierra Grande defeated Creede 39-32 for fifth place, and Center defeated Del Norte 47-37 for third place.

In gold bracket games on Friday, Moffat defeated Antonito 32-25 for fifth place, Custer County defeated Centennial 46-32 for third place, and Sangre de Cristo defeated Crested Butte 31-23 in the championship.
