Mean Moose sweep Pagosa in league opener

ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School baseball team began Intermountain League play on Saturday as it hosted Pagosa Springs at the Ortega Middle School field.

It was a good league opener for the Mean Moose as they swept the Pirates. They had to come from behind in the opener and won, 11-6. They left little doubt in the night cap as the recorded an 11-1 victory.

“We had a late start getting the bats going in the first game, but once we got them going, it rolled right into that second game,” said Alamosa coach Tony Kechter. “I wish we could do it like we did the second game, but our pitching has been solid and doing a good job keeping us in games. Our sticks are starting to come alive.”

Game 1

The Pirates got off to a fast start by scoring a run in the top of the first inning. Chris Martinez led off with a single and he stole second. He took third on Taylor Wells’ groundout, and Martinez came home on Kyler Henderson’s sacrifice fly.

Pagosa scored two more runs in the fourth. Henderson had a leadoff single, and Zach Pouyer also singled. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and Kasen Limebrook, who was courtesy running for Henderson, scored on Bash Gonzalez’s groundout, and Pouyer scored on Sean Ryan’s sacrifice fly.

The Mean Moose got on the bard with a run in their half of the fourth. Jonah Pittman singled and took second on an error. Brennan Maez reached on an error, sending Pittman to third. Pittman came home on a wild pitch.

Pagosa scored two more runs in the fifth. Martinez singled and stole second, and he came home on Wells’ triple. Wells scored on a wild pitch to increase the Pirates’ lead to 5-1.

Alamosa scored once in the bottom of the sixth. A.J. Baker drew a walk and then stole second. An error put Baker on third and he scored on Tony Griego’s single.

The Mean Moose had a big rally in the bottom of the sixth as they scored nine runs. Maez had an infield single, and Nelson Arambula also singled. Baker walked to load the bases, and Evan Anderson singled to plate Maez. A series of errors cleared the bases, and Anderson ended up on third. He scored on a wild pitch to give Alamosa a 7-5 lead.

Jaidyn Burciaga started another rally with a single, and Griego and Carlos Garcia both walked to load the bases. Pittman soingled to score Burciaga, and then Maez cleared the bases with a triple. Maez scored on a wild pitch for an 11-5 Alamosa lead.

The Pirates scored a run in the top of the seventh. Henderson, Pouyer and Ryan all singled, and Limebrook scored as Charles Washburn was hit by a pitch.

But the Mean Moose turned a double play to end the game.

Griego started the game on the mound and was the winning pitcher. He allowed five runs and nine hits and struck out six and walked none. Xavier Lujan pitched the final inning and gave up one run and three hits and he had one strikeout, no walks and one hit batter.

The Mean Moose had nine hits and were led by Arambula who went 2-3, Pittman who went 2-4 with one RBI, and Maez who went 2-4 with a triple and three RBIs

Game 2

The Mean Moose started quickly in the night cap by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Burciaga led off with a single, then stole second. He took third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.

Griego drew a walk and stole second. He came home on Garcia’s single. Garcia also stole second and scored on Arambula’s double.

Alamosa scored once in the second. Anderson walked and stole second. He went to third on Burciaga’s single and Anderson scored on an error.

The Mean Moose added three more runs in the third. Pittman led off with a walk and stole second. Maez also singled and stole second, and Arambula doubled home both runners. Anderson was safe on an error and Arambula came around to score.

Pagosa scored once in the top of the fourth. Pouyer drew a leadoff walk and went to third on an error. Pouyer scored on Gonzalez’s sacrifice fly.

Alamosa put the game away in the fifth. Arambula reached on an error to begin the inning and he stole second. Jo David doubled to plate Arambula, and David scored on Baker’s single.

Anderson tripled to bring home Baker, and Anderson scored on Burciaga’s sacrifice fly to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Anderson went the distance as Alamosa’s pitcher and he earned the win. He allowed one run and three hits and he struck out four and walked four

The Mean Moose collected 10 hits and were led by Burciaga who went 2-3 with one RBI, Arambula who went 2-3 with one RBI, and Baker who went 2-3 with one RBI. Anderson led in RBIs with four.

Alamosa defeated Pueblo Centennial on Monday

The Mean Moose defeated Pueblo Centennial 11-2 Monday at the Runyon Sports Complex’s Hobbs Field.

Alamosa scored four runs in the first, three in the second and fourth innings and one in the fifth.

Pittman went the distance and was the winning pitcher. He allowed two runs and 10 hits and struck out two and walked three.

The Mean Moose were led offensively by David who went 2-4 with three RBIs, Garcia who went 2-4 with one RBI, Pittman who went 2-4 with a double and one RBI, and Burciaga who went 2-5

What’s next

Alamosa (9-7, 2-0) will return to league play on Saturday as it will travel to Bayfield for a doubleheader.

“Those are another two big games and we’ll see if we can get those two wins.”

The first game begins at 11 a.m.
