ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School baseball team trailed Gunnison by four runs at one time in their game Tuesday at the Ortega Middle School field. But the Mean Moose came back to defeat the Cowboys in a walk-off by a score of 9-8.

“We just hung around and hug around and didn’t let it get too out of hand,” said Alamosa coach Tony Kechter. “We kept our spirits up. Evan Anderson did a great job, starting and going five innings. Then Xavier Lujan came in those last two innings and did a great job.”

Gunnison took the early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Talon Kibler led off with a double, and he scored on Cesar Marmalejo’s two-bagger. Grady Buckanon reached on an error, and Marshall Spann drew a walk. Marmalejo scored as Rylee Berry was safe on a fielder’s choice.

Alamosa got on the board with a run in its half of the first. Jaidyn Burciaga had a leadoff single and he took second on an error. He went to third as Tony Griego reached on an error, then Burciaga came home on Carlos Garcia’s sacrifice fly.

The Cowboys went down in order in the second, and the Mean Moose took the lead with two runs in their half of the inning. Brennan Maez led off with a ground rule double, and he scored on Jo David’s double. Anderson singled home David for a 3-2 lead.

Gunnison regained the lead with a five-run third. Kibler had a leadoff single and Marmalejo was hit by a pitch. Both. Runners stole the next base, and Kibler scored on Spann’s groundout.

Kahne Chippini was safe on an error and Marmalejo scored to put the Cowboys back in front at 4-3. Berry doubled home Chippini, Landon Miller singled home Berry, and Ethan Pierce was safe on an error allowing Miller to score and giving Gunnison a 7-3 lead.

The Mean Moose scored twice in the bottom of the third. Griego started the rally with a leadoff single, and Garcia had an infield single. The runners scored on groundouts by Jonah Pittman and Maez, respectively.

Alamosa tied the score in the fourth. David started the inning by reaching on an error and he went to second on a wild pitch. Burciaga was safe on an error to plate Ryan Higareda, who was courtesy running for David, and Burciaga advanced to second on a passed ball. He came home on Griego’s single.

Gunnison regained the lead in the top of the sixth. Cody Casebolt had an infield single and he stole second and took third on Kibler’s groundout. Marmalejo’s infiield single drove home Casebolt.

The Mean Moose won the game in the bottom of the seventh. Burciaga drew a leadoff walk and Griego was hit by a pitch. Garcia’s bunt single loaded the bases, and Pittman’s infield single drove home Burciaga with the tying run.

Maez then singled to plate Griego with the winning run.

Anderson started the game on the mound but did not figure in the decision. He allowed seven runs and seven hits and he struck out seven and walked one. Lujan pitched the final two innings and earned the win. He gave up one run and three hits and he had one strikeout and no walks.

The Mean Moose had 10 hits and were led by Griego who went 2-3 with one RBI, Garcia who went 2-4, and Maez who went 2-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Alamosa (4-6) hosted a doubleheader with 10th-ranked Lamar on Friday. Its next game will be at Monte Vista on Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m.
