Alamosa boys still ranked second

ALAMOSA – Tim Yount released his seventh On the Mat high school wrestling rankings last Thursday with several local competitors being recognized.

Class 3A

Alamosa remained the second-ranked team. According to Yount, the Mean Moose are 1 ½ points behind top-ranked Mullen and one point ahead of third ranked Brush.

Centauri is also ranked as it is sixth.

The Top 10 are as follows. Mullen is first, followed by Alamosa, Brush, Valley, Eaton, Centauri, Resurrection Christian, Fort Lupton, Gunnison and Fort Morgan.

Jefferson, La Junta and The Classical Academy are mentioned as very close.

Alamosa

The Mean Moose have seven ranked individuals and they are led by Uriah Martinez who is first at 126 pounds, and Dyson Woodward who is first at 150.

The rest of the ranked Alamosa wrestlers include Anthony Meder who is second at 113, Jeremiah DeLaCerda who is third at 106, Jace Morgan who is ninth at 165, Max Dokson who is 13th at 190, and Ryan Cordova who is 15th at 157.

Centauri

The Falcons also have seven grapplers in the rankings. Leading the way is Matthew Salazar who is the top-ranked performer at 106.

Other ranked Centauri wrestlers include Parker Buhr who is second at 157, Caden Casias who is second at 120, Spencer Smith who is fifth at 175, Nik Skadberg who is seventh at 144, Troy Munson who is 10th at 165, and Aiden Knecht who is 14th at 138.

Class 2A

Two local teams are in the Top 10 as Center is ranked sixth and Monte Vista is eighth.

Cedaredge is the top-ranked team, followed by Wray, North Fork, Rocky Fords, Highland, Center, Sedgwick County/Fleming, Monte Vista, Wiggins and Meeker.

Buena Vista, West Grand and Fowler are very close according to Yount.

Antonito

There are no Trojans currently in the rankings.

Center

The Vikings had seven wrestlers in the rankings and they are led by Aaron Valadez who is first at 150 pounds.

The remaining ranked Center wrestlers include Andre Meraz who is second at 144, Martin Palma who is fifth at 165, Michael Archuleta who is eighth at 113, Nicolas Palma who is ninth at 120, Caden Ruggles who is 10th at 157, and Matthew Archuleta who is 15th at 126.

Del Norte

Two Tigers are ranked including Paul Neal who is eighth at 157, and Wyatt McIlhaney who is 12th at 215.

Monte Vista

The Pirates have six competitors in the rankings and they are led by Kevin Cisneros who is second at 150, and Jacob Pacheco who is second at 165.

Also ranked for Monte Vista are Jeremiah Baumgardner who is third at 175, Matthew Rodriguez who is seventh at 113, Elijah Baumgardner who is 10th at 132, and Mathieu Dean who is 14th at 106.

Sargent

Jaycian Sierra is the only Farmer in the rankings as he is ninth at 132 pounds.

Sierra Grande/Centennial

Bryant Tijerina is the only ranked Panther as he is 16th at 132.

Class 4A girls

Alamosa remained in the No. 10 position in the Class 4A girls team rankings.

Pueblo Central is still the top-ranked team, followed by Lamar, Sedgwick County/Fleming, Strasburg, Yuma, Canon City, Moffat County, Severance, Skyview, Alamosa, La Junta, Wiggins, Montezuma-Cortez, Wray, Gunnison, Holy Family, Evergreen, Berthoud, Eagle Valley, Manitou Springs, Sterling, West Grand and Woodland Park.

Alamosa

Four Lady Mean Moose are ranked and they are led by Samantha Maestas who is first at 120, and Gizelle Meraz who is first at 115.

The remaining ranked Alamosa wrestlers include Kennedy Hillis who is ninth at 110, and Leah Pintor who is 18th at 105.

Antonito

The Lady Trojans have three ranked wrestlers including Alyssa Abeyta who is 10th at 100, Anaiya Romero who is 14th at 120, and Lauren Gallegos who is 14th at 125.

Del Norte

The Lady Tigers currently have no wrestlers in the rankings.

Monte Vista

Torrina Herrera is the only Lady Pirate who is ranked and she is seventh at 115.

Regionals are this week

The local wrestling teams will be in regional competition on Friday and Saturday with berths in the state tournament at stake.

The Alamosa boys team will be at the Class 3A Region 4 Tournament at Pueblo Centennial.

Centauri will compete at the Class 3A Region 3 Tournament at Grand Valley High School in Parachute.

The Antonito, Center, Del Norte, Sargent, and Sierra Grande/Centennial boys teams will be at the Class 2A Region 4 Tournament at Walsenburg.

The Monte Vista boys team will compete at the Class 2A Region 2 Tournament at Ignacio.

The Alamosa girls team will wrestle at the Class 4A Region 3 Tournament at Canon City.

The Antonito, Del Norte, and Monte Vista girls teams will be at the Class 4A Region 1 Tournament at La Junta.

The Top 4 finishers in each weight division at each regional will qualify for their respective state tournaments which will take place at Ball Arena in Denver on Feb. 13-15.
