Centauri boys still undefeated after win over Alamosa

LA JARA – The sixth-ranked Centauri High School boys basketball team remained udefeated on the season on Tuesday as it scored a 58-41 win over Alamosa at the CHS gym.

Carson Bagwell scored three straight baskets to give the Falcons a 6-0 lead. Victor Zepeda made a 3-point basket for the Mean Moose’s first points, and Josh Gonzalez made a layup to cut the deficit to 6-5.

Jace Haslett knocked down a jumper, but Brennan Maez made a three to tie the score at 8-8.

Haslett made a trey on the other side, but Maez scored in the paint to cut the Centauri lead to 11-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Keaden McGinnis scored the first basket of the second quarter, but Nelson Arambula drove for a layup. Troy Sowards then made a pair of free throws, but Jaidyn Burciaga hit a jumper to cut the Falcons’ lead to 15-14.

Centauri then went on a 14-0 run to open a big lead. Sowards scored eight points in the run, Carson Shawcroft five points and Haslett one.

Gonzalez split at the line to end the Centauri run, but McGinnis made a layup. Zepeda hot a jump shot to bring the Mean Moose within 31-17 at halftime.

Sean Jarvies opened the second half scoring with a layup. Tony Griego made a 3-pointer, but Sowards scored two straight baskets for a 37-20 Falcons lead.

Griego made a layup and added a free throw, and Maez also scored to reduce the deficit to 37-25. But Haslett and Shawcroft made layups, and Sowards two free throws to increase the lead to 43-25.

Zepeda ended the Falcons run with a jumper, but Jarvies made a three and Centauri led 46-27 at the end of the third quarter.

Zepeda began the fourth quarter with a pair from the line, but Sowards made a layup. Zepeda then drained a three, but Haslett scored in the paint.

Zepeda made two more free throws, and Gonzalez a layup. But Sowards hit a jump shot, and Shawcroft split at the line. Sowards drove for a layup and added a free throw, and Haslett also scored to give Centauri its largest lead at 58-36.

Zepeda made his third trey, and Jayden Lujan made a layup to wrap up the scoring.

Sowards led all scorers with 23 points, and Haslett was next for Centauri with 12.

Zepeda led Alamosa with 17 points.

Centauri (15-0, 5-0) will travel to Pagosa Springs on Saturday with game time scheduled for 7 p.m.

Alamosa (2-12, 0-4) hosted Ignacio on Friday, and it will host Lamar today at 5 p.m.
