ALAMOSA — A 23-year-old man, later identified as Bobby Montoya of La Jara, allegedly entered the Big R in Alamosa on Thursday evening and stole two boxes of ammunition and a flashlight. He then brandished a gun when confronted by a store employee.
According to a press release from the Alamosa Police Department (APD), officers responded to the location at 148 Craft Dr. on a report of an armed robbery and theft at about 6:25 p.m. and quickly coordinated with Conejos County deputies and the La Jara Police Department after receiving a description of Montoya’s vehicle.
Deputies located the vehicle at a residence in La Jara where Montoya was taken into custody after a brief confrontation. Officers did not find a handgun on his person but secured the residence for further investigation. A search warrant was executed at the residence, where officers located three boxes of ammunition, two of which matched the stolen items. Additionally, officers discovered a small safe containing illicit narcotics, including fentanyl pills.
Montoya was subsequently transported to the Alamosa County Jail and booked on charges of Aggravated Robbery, Theft, Resisting Arrest, and Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Through further investigation, officers were able to gain information on the location of the handgun, which had been discarded after the robbery. The stolen firearm was later recovered from a recycling bin at Boyd Park in Alamosa.
The Alamosa Police Department would like to thank the Conejos County Sheriff’s Office, La Jara Police Department, and all other agencies involved for their assistance in the investigation.
Montoya is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 11.
