Alamosa leads Class 3A after second day of state wrestling

Nine SLV wrestlers advance to finals

DENVER – The Alamosa High School boys wrestling team is in first place after the second day of the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 3A Tournament Friday at Ball Arena.

The Mean Moose have scored 106 ½ points – just 2 ½ points ahead of second-place Brush.

All four of Alamosa’s semifinalists all won their matches and will compete in their respective finals today.

Jeremiah DeLaCerda (106) advanced to the finals with a 19-3 technical fall over Pagosa Springs’ Anthony Manzanares. The match ended at the 5:10 mark.

Anthony Meder (113) advanced to the finals by pinning Gunnison’s Damyon Funk in 1:13.

Uriah Martinez (126) scored a 9-7 decision over Bennett’s Caysen Scholtz to advance to the finals.

Dyson Woodward (150) won by a 15-0 technical fall over Grand Valley’s Gabriel Mendoza.

Centauri is in fourth place with 73 ½ points.

Two of the Falcons semifinalists were victorious on Friday.

Matthew Salazar (106) made quick work of Skyview’s Andrew Pedragon as he won by fall in 1:55.

Parker Buhr (157) pinned Alameda International’s Sean Johnson in 3:53.

Two Falcons came up short in their semifinals. Troy Munson (165) lost by a 16-0 technical fall to Brush’s Austin Ley, and Spencer Smith (175) lost by a 13-11 decision to Brush’s Ritchie Bruno.

DeLaCerda and Salazar will meet gain for the 106-pound championship. Meder will take on Eaton’s Blake Hawkins in the 113-pound championship. Martinez will face Abraham Lincoln’s Jordan Romero for the championship at 126. Woodward will meet Salida’s Samuel Johnson at the 150-pound title. Buhr will compete against Eaton’s Paxton Pettinger for the championship at 157.

In Class 2A, Center is tied for seventh place with 62 ½ points, and Monte Vista is ninth.

One Viking won his semifinal match as Aaron Valadez (150) defeated Monte Vista’s Kevin Cisneros by an 11-3 major decision. He will take on Wray’s Samuel Meisner in the finals.

Three other Center wrestlers fell short in the semifinals. Matthew Archuelta (113) was pinned by Crowley County’s Derrick Buford in 3:44, Andree Meraz (144) lost by a 9-2 decision to Sedgwick County/Fleming’s Scotty Engle, and Martin Palma (165) lost by a 15-0 technical fall to Holly’s Tripp DuVall in 2:25.

The Pirates’ other semifinalist, Jeremiah Baumgardner (175) lost to Highland’s Wyatt Chase by a 13-0 major decision.

In girls wrestling, Alamosa is in ninth place with 47 ½ points.

Both of the Lady Mean Moose’s semifinalists won their semifinals.

Gizelle Marez (115) pinned Skyview’s Arianna Arellano in 1:52, and Samantha Maestas (120) pinned Walsenburg’s Eruka Peterson in 1:34.

Marez will face Walsenburg’s Ivey McAlhaney, and Maestas will compete against Berthoud’s Julia Schnell.

The tournament resumes at 9 a.m. today, and the parade of champions is at 5 p.m.
