MONTE VISTA – The Alamosa High School boys basketball team tasted victory for the first time since Dec. 20 on Tuesday as they defeated Monte Vista 50-44 at the MVHS gym.
The win ended a 13-game losing streak.
Victor Zepeda and Jaidyn Burciaga both scored to give the Mean Moose an early 4-0 lead. Darrien Archuleta scored the Pirates’ first points, and Alex Marquez made one of two from the free throw line to cut the lead to 4-3.
Josh Gonzalez made a layup, however, Azariah Hurtado scored in the paint, and Kaden Mellott made a layup and a free throw for an 8-6 Monte Vista lead.
Zepeda and Jayden Lujan both scored to give Alamosa a 10-8 edge at the end of the first quarter.
Gonzalez opened the second half by splitting at the line, however, Marquez made two free throws. Lujan drilled a 3-point basket, but Hurtado made one of two from the line and then made a layup to bring the Pirates within 14-13.
Nelson Arambula pushed the lead to 16-13, however, Marquez made two more free tosses. Zepeda then made four straight free throws, and Arambula made a layup for a 24-15 Alamosa lead.
Ismael Medina made a three and Hurtado scored again to reduce the lead to 24-20. Zepeda made two straight baskets, but Kaden Madrid made two straight free throws. Zepeda hit a jumper, however, Hurtado buried a trey and Marquez split at the line to reduce Alamosa’s lead to 30-26 at halftime.
The Pirates opened the second half red-hot. First Madrid hit a jumper, and Marquez made a 3-pointer to give the Pirates a 31-30 lead. Jamian Martinez, Hurtado and Madrid all scored for a 37-30 Monte Vista advantage.
Burciaga and Brennan Maez both drilled threes, and Maez also made a layup to give the lead back to the Mean Moose. Zepeda scored again for a 40-37 lead.
Mellott made a trey to deadlock the score, but Zepeda answered with a three on the other end to give the Mean Moose a 43-40 edge at the end of the third quarter.
Kobe Jiron scored the first points of the fourth quarter, and Marquez also scored to help the Pirates take a 44-43 lead.
Burciaga made a 3-pointer to give Alamosa the lead for good at 46-44. He later drove for a layup for a 48-44 lead.
Alamosa made two free throws in the final minute to wrap up the scoring.
Zepeda led all scorers with 18 points, and Burciaga had 11.
Hurtado was Monte Vista’s top scorer with 12 points, followed by Marquez with 11.
Alamosa (3-17, 1-8) hosted Pagosa Springs on Friday. It will travel to Ignacio next Friday with game time slated for 7 p.m.
Monte Vista (9-9, 2-6) played at Bayfield on Friday. It will play at sixth-ranked Centauri today at 7 p.m.
