ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School boys basketball team had a rough time this past weekend as it lost two games played at the AHS gym.
On Friday, the Mean Moose played Ignacio tough before being defeated 49-43. On Saturday, they had a tougher time as they lost to fifth-ranked Lamar 51-19.
Ignacio 49, Alamosa 43
The Mean Moose took an early lead on baskets by Jayden Lujan and Victor Zepeda. But the Bobcats scored nine straight points. Charley Pargin and D.J. Hendren both made 3-point baskets, while Sonny Flores made a layup and Cayson Burcham a free throw.
Josh Gonzalez scored the final basket of the first quarter to bring the Mean Moose within a 9-6 deficit.
Tony Griego began the second quarter with a jumper, but Pargin scored again. Griego made another jump shot to bring Alamosa within 11-10, but Burcham hit a jumper.
Lujan made one of two free throws and then scored a layup to tie the score at 13-13. Lincoln Gillespie made a 3-pointer , but Lujan drove for a layup and Jaidyn Burciaga made a three to put the Mean Moose back into the lead at 18-16.
Ignacio, however, would score the final seven points of the quarter. Stoney White Thunder-Lucero scored five of them, and Marquise Cibrian scored the other two.
The Bobcats led 23-18 at the intermission.
Zepeda opened the second half with two treys to bring the Mean Moose within 25-24. But Flores made a three for Ignacio. Burciaga buried a 3-pointer to again bring Alamosa within a one-point deficit at 28-27.
The Bobcats closed out the quarter by scoring seven points. Ambrose Valdez scored five points, and Gillespie scored two and Ignacio led 35-27 at the end of the third.
Hendren, Cibiran and Burcham all scored to give Ignacio its largest lead at 41-29. But the Mean Moose started a comeback which was sparked by a Zepeda 3-pointer.Lujan hit a jumper, and Griego two free throws to help Alamosa close the margin to 41-36.
Pargin hit a jumper, but Lujan buried a trey to close the gap to 43-39.
Valdez, however, helped the Bobcats put the game on ice by scoring six points.
Zepeda led Alamosa in scoring with 15 points, followed by Lujan with 10 and Griego with eight.
Valdez was Ignacio’s leading scorer with 11 points. Hendren and Pargin both scored seven.
Lamar 51, Alamosa 19
The Thunder got off to a hot start with a 19-1 first quarter. Jacob Dunning made three 3-point baskets, Gabrian Jacobs and Cason Pollart both scored another trey, and Alex Williams and Braxen Shelton both scored two points.
Gonzalez scored the Mean Moose’s only point of the first quarter.
The Thunder outscored the Mean Moose 7-3 in the second. Pollart made another three, and Jesus Lopez and Dunning both scored two points. Zepeda made a three for the Mean Moose,but Lamar led 26-4 at the break.
Lamar also outscored the Mean Moose 16-7 in the third. Dunning made two more 3-pointers, Williams scored four points, and Diego Estrada and Andrew Chairez both scored three.
Burciaga made a three, and Zepeda and Gonzales both scored two as Lamar had a 42-11 lead.
Lamar scored nine points in the fourth and Alamosa eight. Zepeda scored five points in the quarter and Griego three. Lopez scored four for the Thunder, Dunning three, and Chairez two.
Zepeda led Alamosa in scoring with 10 points. Dunning scored 20 for Lamar which included six 3-point baskets.
Alamosa (2-14, 0-5) hosted Monte Vista on Tuesday. The Mean Moose will host Bayfield on Friday at 7 p.m. and then travel to Montezuma-Cortez on Saturday for a 2 p.m. start.
