ALAMOSA — Deputies with the Costilla County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) were dispatched to a residence on Governor Road approximately five miles south of Fort Garland on Friday afternoon, Sept. 9, related to a report of an individual shooting at his neighbor.

Upon arriving on the scene, a suspect identified as Christopher Ocasio began acting in a threatening manner. When another deputy arrived, Ocasio began shooting at the deputies.

At that time, CCSO deputies retreated for cover while Ocasio continued to fire his weapon in their direction. Additional officers arrived on the scene, and the deputies were able to move to a safe point without injury.

According to a post on the CCSO Facebook page, the situation became a standoff between the suspect and the additional officers.

The Alamosa Police Department SWAT team responded to a call for assistance as did SWAT teams from the Salida Police Department, Conejos County Sheriff’s Office and Chaffee County Sheriff’s Department SWAT.

After a three-hour standoff, Ocasio was taken into custody and transported to the Costilla County Jail where he is being held on numerous counts of suspicion of attempted murder, felony menacing and reckless endangerment.

Bond was originally set at $150,000. However, due to the timing of the incident, a visiting judge presided over the advisement on Saturday and bond was reduced to $50,000.

Ocasio continues to be held in Costilla County Jail on the reduced bond.

Costilla County Sheriff Danny Sanchez said he was grateful for the agencies involved who helped end the incident without injury.

“With the help of these agencies, a volatile situation was brought to a safe ending where nobody was hurt or killed and the suspect safely taken into custody,” Sanchez said.
