SAN LUIS — The Maestas family recently announce the grand opening of their art gallery, Jacales Fine Art Gallery, will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 30. The event is being dubbed a "Celebration of the Arts in San Luis."
The art gallery features the work of a number of local artists within a 40-mile radius, Dana Maestas said, with the exception of Michael Vargas who lives in Taos, N.M.
Paintings, bronzes and wood carvings are featured.
Huberto Maestas and his daughter Bianca work primarily on bronzes and do paintings and murals. Their work can be seen throughout San Luis. Son Aubin Maestas works with Bianca in the foundry. Grandson Amyas displayed an early talent for sculpture, creating one of himself and his sister, when he was 6 years old. The statues have a lot of movement and expression.
Carlos Sandoval is another artist from San Luis whose murals adorn some buildings. Sandoval painted the mural on the side of the Jacales Fine Art Gallery, and it was recently inducted into the National Historic Register. A celebration commemorating that will be held in the future. Jacales is a reference to the history of the area when the first settlers built their fences out of poles, like the one seen next to the gallery.
The artwork of Charles Ewing, Coni Grant, Karen Ahlgren, Carl Jaquez, Carlos Barela, Jack Kruetzer and Randy Pijoan will also be displayed at the gallery.
Entertainment will be provided at the reception on Sept. 30 by Elizabeth Gettel, a talented pianist.
The gallery was remodeled with bright colorful walls and a clean concrete floor.
Jacales Fine Art Gallery will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Dana Maestas said she hopes her husband Huberto will teach classes in sculpture in the future and would like to see more art galleries open.
Dana and Huberto Maestas recently received the Patron of the Arts award in Alamosa.
