The memorial park group had a car/motorcycle show this past July in the county parking lots. It partnered with Jamie Dominguez and Tommy Vigil, who are members of two local car clubs. This year, plans are underway for a second annual car/motorcycle show. It will be held on July 13 at the Alamosa Rec Center.
The group held the second annual 5k/10k walk/run this past November. The third annual 5k/10k walk/run will be held on Nov. 9 at the Alamosa Rec Center. There will be activities for kids.
The Alamosa Veterans Memorial Park was started in 2016 by Frank Muniz along with several community members who wanted to recognize Veterans and give the community a place to reflect and honor Veteran men and women who have served in all branches of the military. Muniz served as the Alamosa County Veterans Service Officer for many years and fought in Vietnam.
According to Helen Sigmond with the group, estimates of about $86,000 for the project have been raised with the cement work costing $120,000 [less the donated work] for the cement and $300,00-$400,000 for a statue.
The public is invited to attend meetings the first Thursday of the month in the Commissioners Room at the Alamosa County Administration Building at 4:30 p.m. Anyone wanting to donate to the memorial can send a check made payable to Alamosa Veterans Memorial Park, P.O. Box 1245, Alamosa, CO 81101. All donations are tax deductible and appreciated.
