Wilbert Archuleta's remains identified

LAS  SAUCES — Human remains found Sept. 19 at Las Sauces have been identified as Wilbert Archuleta, 39, who came to the San Luis Valley to visit his father and went missing. The first report was made Aug. 14.

Conejos County Sheriff Garth Crowther said his department was notified that possible human remains had been found at Las Sauces. Deputies arrived with an investigative team and determined that the badly decomposed corpse was, indeed, human.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), 12th Judicial District Attorney and the Conejos County Coroner’s Office. The remains were immediately sent to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office in Colorado Springs for autopsy and positive identification.

Due to the condition of the remains, and the fact that Archuleta left his wallet at home, cause of death was not immediately determined, and Crowther is awaiting laboratory reports.

Numerous options are being considered, the sheriff said.
