Teen dies in roll-over crash Thursday in Conejos County

CONEJOS COUNTY — A teenager died in a single-vehicle crash Thursday night, June 16, on County Road 18 and County Road R in Conejos County, the Colorado State Patrol reported.

The crash was reported at approximately 10:51 p.m. The reporting party stated that one of the occupants of the vehicle, a grey SUV, was pinned under it, according to CSP.

An 18-year-old male was driving the SUV and had two passengers, a 17-year-old male in the front seat and a 16-year-old male in the rear seat.

The 17-year-old male sustained fatal injuries in the accident. The other occupants sustained minor injuries. All occupants were transported to Conejos County Hospital, CSP reported.

Investigation showed that the SUV was traveling north on County Road 18 at a high rate of speed and veered off the west side of the roadway. The vehicle then overcorrected, causing the SUV to roll multiple times and cross a ditch off the roadway's east side. The SUV collided with a fence and came to rest on its top facing east just off the southeast corner of the intersection of County Road 18 and County Road R.

The intersection was closed for approximately 75 minutes while the crash was investigated.
