Sanford girls second at state meet

Holly McDaniel earned four gold medals

ALAMOSA – The Colorado High School Activities Association hosted its annual state track and field meet this past weekend at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood. Several athletes from the San Luis Valley won individual championships and the Sanford girls were the state runners-up.

Class 1A


Holly McDaniel won three individual titles for the Lady Mustangs. She won the triple jump at 33 feet and 2 ¼ inches, the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.30 seconds and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 47.24 seconds.

Erica Miller placed second in two events. She was the runner-up in the 800-meter run in 2:25.82 and in the 400-meter dash in 59.08 seconds. She also placed eighth in the 200 meters in 27.58.

Also scoring in individual events for the Lady Mustangs were Kate McDaniel who was sixth in the 300 hurdles in 50.64, and Brecken Crowther who was ninth in the long jump at 13-1.

In girls relays, the team of Ashley Dominguez, Brooklynn Reynolds, Holly McDaniel and Miller won the 800-meter sprint medley in 1:52.42. Dominguez, Kate McDaniel, Bella Peterson and Brooklynn Reynolds were seventh in the 4x200 in 1:53.79, and Dominguez, Kate McDaniel, Kasey Gylling and Reynolds were fifth in the 4x100 in 50.86.

The Lady Mustangs scored 72 points; second to Merino with 106.

For the Sanford boys team, Lincoln Reynolds won two events as he was victorious in the 100 in 11.19 and the 200 in 22.90. He was also second in the 400 in 50.86.

Tucker Canty also score for the Mustangs as he placed seventh in the 800 in 2:07.18.

The 4x200 team of Kaden Cary, William Malouff, Canty and Reynolds were second in 1:34.81.

The Mustangs placed eighth with 39 points.


Two Creede girls competed in the high jump. Jasmine Laing tied for fifth place at 4-10, and Lila Fairchild tied for seventh at 4-8.

The Lady Miners tied for 30th with six points.

Sangre de Cristo

Two Thunderbirds competed at the state meet. William Wilson placed seventh in the 1,600 meters in 4:59.12, and Brody Artaechevarria was 12th in the 800 in 2:09.17.

The Thunderbirds tied for 34th with three points.

Sierra Grande

The Panthers had only one representative as Ayden Lopez tied for sixth in the high jump at 5-7.

Sierra Grande placed 33rd with 3 ½ points.

Class 3A


The Falcons had one individual champion as Troy Sowards won the high jump at a personal best height of 6-9. Carson Bagwell also competed in the event and tied for 14th at 5-9.

One Lady Falcon competed in the high jump as Alyvia Norton tied for 11th at 4-9.

In relay events, Bailey Graber, Faith Medellin, Jocelyn Jarvies andMcKenzie Torres were 16th in the 4x800 in 10:38.00.

The Falcons tied for 24th in the boys meet with 10 points.

Class 2A


Ciara Paiz competed in two events for the Lady Vikings. She placed seventh in the long jump at 15-6 ½, and ninth in the triple jump at 31-11.

For the boys team, Andree Meraz was eighth in the discus at 127-4.

Center girls tied for 31st with four points, and the Vikings tied for 41st with two points.

Del Norte

For the Tigers, Damon Ledford-Vigil tied for ninth in the pole vault at 11-9.

Ledford-Vigil, Mads Kreutzer, Cruz Matta and Caleb Cowett placed 13th in the 4x800 in 8:45.55.


The Lady Farmers had one representative at state as Bailey Asbell finished 18th in the 100 hurdles in 17.99 seconds.
