10th annual Rocky Mountain Estates Firehouse Art Show July 9-10

ROCKY MOUNTAIN ESTATES — It’s time for the 10th annual Rocky Mountain Estates Community Firehouse Art Show and Fundraiser. Refreshments, live music by Randy Brown, the work of world-class artists are part of the event.

The show will be held Saturday, July 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 10, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Rocky Mountain Estates, located 27 miles west of Antonito and 29 miles east of Chama on Forest Service Road 250 between Horca and Platoro.

Featuring the work of renowned artists from Rocky Mountain Estates and the surrounding area, the show will include new paintings and sculptures by Charles Ewing, Jim Gilmore, and Gwen McBride, as well as work by fiber artist Joyce Pardington, gourd artist Andi Wardlaw, fabric artist Nancy Wintz, and woodworker David French.

This year’s show also welcomes the return of celebrated silversmith Gene Christensen, specializing in handcrafted Southwest-style jewelry and one-of-a-kind designs.

Proceeds from the show will benefit the local volunteer fire department and firehouse which are so vital to this remote mountain community. As it can take up to an hour for local fire departments to reach the area, the community’s goal is to provide safety for residents and visitors until outside help can arrive. The volunteer fire department and firehouse are supported almost entirely through contributions from the community and fundraisers such as this.

Directions: Take State Highway 17 from either Antonito or Chama to the town of Horca, where event signs will be posted. From Horca, head north on Forest Service Road 250 for 7 miles. The firehouse is adjacent to Rocky Mountain Lodge, 7700 Fdr 250. For more information, contact Barbara Brown at 719-376-5359.
