Manassa Police Chief arrested for assault

MANASSA — Manassa Police Chief Charles DeHerrera was arrested Nov. 12 by Conejos County Sheriff's deputies who responded to a disturbance call in the community .
DeHerrera, 55, was arrested on charges of felony menacing, third degree assault and prohibited use of a weapon. The menacing charge is a class 5 felony, the assault charge and the weapons charges are class 2 misdemeanors.
On Nov. 12 at approximately 11 p.m. sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a location in the community 'to aid in a disturbance ' according to Conejos Undersheriff Justin Harlan.
The location and nature of the incident was not disclosed, but culminated in the arrest of DeHerrera . Although the case has been forwarded to the district attorney's office following the arrest, Harlan said the investigation was not complete.
DeHerrera was released after posting a $5,000 bond.
A hearing on the case is set for 9:30 a.m. Tue., Dec. 11 in Conejos County Court.
Manassa Mayor Terry DePriest said the town is currently advertising for a new police chief and DeHerrera had tendered his resignation, but indicated the officer had appeared to change his mind about quitting.
Law enforcement for thecommunity will be handled by the Conejos County Sheriff's Office or the Colorado State Patrol, according to a town official.
