ANTONITO—Antonito resident Jose G. “Gabby” Villarreal, 80, passed away February 13, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Gabby was born June 8, 1928 in Navajo, N.M., the son of Agustin Villarreal and Albinita Martinez Villarreal. He was united in marriage to Ellen Trujillo on August 5, 2000 at St. Augustine Church in Antonito. Gabby was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He is a 21-year Marine veteran, serving his country in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Proceding his career in the service, Gabby became a local and cross country truck driver until his retirement. Gabby enjoyed fishing, casinos, playing cards, working on his front yard, tinkering in his garage, hand tooling leather as well as spending time traveling to see family.
He is survived by his wife Ellen Villarreal; children Tony Villarreal of Antonito, Arnold (Rhonda) Duran of Westminster, Colo., Jose (Marquita) Villarreal of Farmington, N.M., Melanie (Ruben) Hernandez of Brighton, Colo., Roberta (Matthew) Moser of Billings, Mont., Sarah Gallegos of Greeley, Colo., Terry (Kirk) Golba of Grand Junction, Colo., Cheryl (Dale) Hall of Alliance, Neb., Dayana (Steven) Lucero of Albuquerque; 22 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sister Angela Lobato of Alamosa. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Jose was preceded in death by his parents Agustin and Albinita Villarreal, sons Richard George, Michael Villarreal, brothers Florintino, Joe, Agustin, Medardo, Rumaldo, two sisters Zenaida and Suzie.
And in accordance with Gabby’s wishes, there will be a closed casket. The Mass service was held Feb. 18, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Conejos. Interment followed at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, N.M., with full military honors.
